(SEAWARD PR 11)

PHASING STICK

1.      GENERAL

Phasing stick is used in high voltage installation for phase testing between two terminals before connection is made. It is also used as a voltage indicator for 11kV installation.

2.      COMPONENT OF PHASING STICKS

a.       Live Conductor Tester

Conductor tester is basically a paper (resin) indulted rod and the handle of it is rubber covered. The whole rod is 98cm in length. It has a contact piece at the end of the rubber covered handle to which the lead are connected. It also has a voltmeter connected to it. The voltmeter has a 0 – 15kV scale. Each division on the voltmeter represents 1 kV.

b.      The Phasing Rod

This is similar to the live conductor tester. The only difference is that the voltmeter is omitted.

c.       The Proving Unit

The proving unit is used to test that the phasing rod, the live conductor and the voltmeter are in good condition. The proving unit has a ‘HT’ casket, a variable resistance knob, a test switch S, a test lead plug P and earth terminal E and also an HT indication bulb.

The proving operates on dry batteries to produce a high voltage of approximate 5kV. Each battery is 4.5 V and a total of 3 batteries connected in series are used. The batteries are externally kept and connected to the proving unit by means of two terminals from the proving unit itself. The terminals are marked red and blue which are connected to the positive and negative of the batteries respectively.

d.      Extension Rod

An extension rod of 99.5 cm is available and can be fitted to the phasing rod or live conductor tester.

There is also an adaptor, which is bent at an angle so as to be used in difficult situations. This adaptor can be fitted to either phasing stick or even to the extension rod itself.

e.       Test Leads

The test leads are given to aid in phasing out as well as for testing the phasing sticks.

Three types of leads are given

i.        which is fitted at both ends with a jack

ii.      which is fitted at one end with a clip and the other end has a socket

iii.    which has one end fitted with a jack and the other end with a clip

f.       Casing

All the phasing equipment are placed in a wooden case which measures 140cm x 35cm x 60.5cm.
